LEARN HOW YOUR SPOUSE COMMUNICATES

Not everybody communicates the same way. Some people talk a lot when they are upset.

Not everybody communicates the same way. Some people talk a lot when they are upset. Some people become quiet. Some people need reassurance. Some people need space. This is where many couples misunderstand each other. A wife may say: “My husband doesn’t care because he is quiet.” Meanwhile, the husband may be quiet because he is trying not to say something hurtful. A husband may say: “My wife complains too much.” Meanwhile, the wife may simply be trying to explain what is hurting her. Instead of only reacting to how your spouse speaks, try to understand what they are trying to say. Sometimes the words are not perfect, but there is a message underneath them.Sometimes, it’s not even what your spouse is saying that causes the problem. It could be the tone, the timing, or the way the message comes across. You may be trying to explain yourself, but your spouse hears it as nagging. Your spouse may be quiet because they need time, but you read it as “they don’t care.”So let’s talk openly: Have you ever misunderstood your spouse because of the way they communicated something, only to later realise they meant something completely different? What happened, and what did you learn from it? You can also share something you wish your spouse understood better about the way you communicate when you’re upset, hurt, tired or overwhelmed.
